My parents came to Seattle in the '40's before having children. My
mother (Ruth Jones) never went back home to Crookston until Dad (Oscar
Hendrickson) died to see his
sisters. Unfortunately when my brother went with our Mom he didn't ask any
questions about the family.....This sounds like a Peyton Place saga....Then our
family home burned and all records of my Mother & Dad's family went with it;
including pictures. My sister & I are trying to recreate our family history
for our grand kids. By the way...neat web site you have...

Just recently watched the PBS special on the life of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain). The second part of the series talks about in 1895, he had toured the US in a lecture circuit. They showed a brief glimpse of his schedule and we could not help noticing a stop at the Crookston Hotel on July 29th 1895. It was only one of 3 stops in Minnesota. Minneapolis was one, Duluth and of coarse Crookston.We were wondering if there was a news paper in Crookston back then? And if so, was there any record of Mark Twains scheduled visit to the Crookston Hotel. Crookston must have been at one time a major city in Minnesota?Lee John & Carole (Jenks) HagenCoonRapids MN 55433

It's about 7 inches tall and has 3 handles and is shaped like an urn. It's inscribed using some sort of hand tool. On one of the 3 sections (between handles) it says "Poultry", and on the next it says "Display", and on the third it says "Crookston, Minn 1908". I have often been curious about it, who it might've belonged to and what sort of event or competition the urn could have been an award for. I grew up in southern Indiana and was very active in the county fair, 4-H, etc., and I know that these sorts of events, the winners and their awards are usually written about and celebrated in the public newspaper. Can you help me find any information about this?
Also, how far is Crookston from Grand Forks? I'm a flight attendant and I fly often to some of the small towns in outstate MN that have airports serviced by Northwest Airlink. I've never been to Crookston but it might be fun to visit sometime.
Thanks for any help you can give me,
Sincerely, Roger W. Sisson

Hello,My name is Paul McKinley. I live in Carson City, Michigan.My Grandfather Benjamin H. Miller & his wife Josephine and Ben's brother Dean A. Miller & his wife Harriet worked a farm outside of Crookston (perhaps 10 miles). I'm certain they moved there in 1914 and left the area between 1928 & 1929. Ben & Jo's daughters (my mother & aunt) were both born in Crookston, one in 1915, the other in 1918 or 1919). In a letter written to his parents (Sam and Rose Hall of Maxwell, Iowa) he described a station (railroad?) called Kanckle. Are you aware of Kanckle Station? If so, can you tell me in which direction from the town it lies?
Also, can you tell me how would I go about looking up land records for these boys for the year 1915?I'm told that one (Dean) or both of the brothers moved into town in approximately 1921. They lived at 504 Hunter St. Can you tell me if this house still survives?I plan to visit Crookston this comming summer or fall. Any information you might have would be appreciated.Thanks,Paul McKinley

------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: "Frode Igland"Subject: Genealogical information appr. 1910 Date sent: Fri, 3 Jul 1998 12:57:35 +0200 Hello Crookston, My name is Frode Igland, and I live in Bergen, Norway. I am searching for for information on my paternal grandmother's brother. His birth name was Rasmus Olai Johanson Varpe. He was born in Norway in 1871 at the farm Varpe in Bremanger parish, Bremanger municipality in Sogn og Fjordane county. The mail address in Norway at that time would have been Bremangerpollen, and the county was named Nordre Bergenhus Amt at that time. He left for America from Bergen on 17 April 1905. In the emigration records of the port of Bergen he stated that he was going to North Dakota, and that he had relatives there. In 1909 he visited Norway, and on his return to America from Bergen on March 20, 1909, he stated that he was a carpenter and that he was going to Crookston, Minnesota. He was registered as unmarried on both occasions. We have no particular clue of his whereabouts since, but the family story says he died young and unmarried. He may have retained his original name in Crookston, as obviously there are quite few people with Scandinavian names. However, he may also have changed his first name to Ray/Roy or taken his second given name as his daily name, e.g. in teh form of Ole. He may have cut his farm name and used Johansen/Johanson/Johnson, and so on. We would be grateful if anybody could provide some information about him, and particularly if there would be any descendants. I would gues sensus information, land registers, cemetary records would be available sources. And maybe there are still people alive that remember or know something about him. Please, bear in mind that negative information is valuable as well, i.e. that he was NOT registered in Crookston, that he is NOT buried in that particular cemetary, etc. This is like police investigation, it is equally important to check people and places out of the case, so that we can close some avenues for further research. Those responsible for www.crookston.net are free to use this information in any way they like. I noticed that Crookston has a Senior Citizens Club and a historical society. If you want to put this in local newspapers or any other mass media (including internet bulletion boards), please feel free to do so. I can be reached at: E-mail: frigland@online.no Mail: Lille Øvregaten 2 N-5018 Bergen, Norway Phone: Home 011 47 55 32 87 52 (all digits from your end) Work 011 47 55 21 98 17 Cellular: 011 47 916 87 710 Fax: Work 011 47 55 21 16 40 I have very much genealogical information on Bremanger, Davik, Eid and Innvik parishes in Sogn og Fjordane county, and some on the island of Otterøy outside Namsos and the area of Åfjord in Nord-Trøndelag county (formerly Nordre Trondhjems Amt). If anybody needs assistance in those areas, please do not hesitate to contact me, and I will see if I can assist in any way. Looking forward to every response. Yours sincerely, Frode Igland
