Who lived here in 1896?

The information for this file was ‘hand set’ type… each letter was put in place with tweezers. Mistakes happened quite easily. When the information was transferred to this file the eye and the hand could easily add to the errors.
Please be careful, and consider all possibilities. Sections within a township (six miles by six miles) are numbered thusly:

Township information concerning some of those listed included place of birth (abbreviated b/the year when given), immigration date (e/the year) and the year settled in Polk County (s/).
You may wish to search for land records at www.glorecords.blm.gov/
If you are researching Townships on Polk’s far eastern edge (Johnson, Gully, Eden, Queen & Columbia)
You might want to check Clearwater (Bagley 56621) & Beltrami (Bemidji 56601) Counties. Clearwater split off (1902) from Beltrami so you might have to check both…
If you’re checking to the north Higdem, Sandsville, Farley, Brislet, Helgeland
Still north… Belgium, Brandt, Helgeland, Johnson you need to check
Pennington which split off (1910) from Red Lake; & Marshall (Warren 56762) which split off (1910) from Kittson.
Still north… Belguim, Parness, Gentilly, Tilden, Grove Park Badger, Lessor, Chester you’ll want to check Red Lake (Red Lake Falls 56750) which split off (1896) from Polk;
& if you’re checking to the south… Hubbard, Scandia, Reis, Liberty, Garfield, Garden, it’s Norman County ((Ada 56510) which split off from Polk (1881)
Still south… Winger, Sletten, Rosebud & Columbia it’s Mahnomen (created from Becker & Norman 1906) (Mahnomen 56557)
to the west… Higdem, Esther, Grand Forks, Rhinehart, (maybe Huntsville), Bygland, Tynsid, Roome, Vineland and Hubbard it will be Trail (was a split off from Grand Forks, Burbank & Cass counties (1875) & Grand Forks (Grand Forks, ND 58201) Counties. You may also wish to contact the State Historical Society of North Dakota, Liberty Memorial Bldg., Bismarck, ND 58501
Alien Registration is indexed - and at MHS. If one was not a citizen, one was required to fill it out. It would list place of birth, date of arrival, wife, children & everyone's ages, reason for not becoming a citizen, occupation, a question about whether they had a relative serving in the military. - it's a 4-page document.
